It pulls in air
A fan draws outdoor air across a coil. Even at 55°F, that air holds plenty of usable heat.
It concentrates the heat
A compressor squeezes the refrigerant that picked up that heat, which drives its temperature way up.
It warms the water
Pool water runs through a heat exchanger and comes back a few degrees warmer, pass after pass, all day.

Heat pump or gas pool heater?
A heat pump moves heat out of the outdoor air into your pool water instead of burning fuel, so it usually costs far less to run over a season. Gas heats faster, which suits pools that sit cold and get heated only for a weekend. If you swim most days from spring to fall, a heat pump is usually the better fit.
How warm can a heat pump keep my pool?
Most owners hold 80 to 84°F. Heat pumps work best when the air is above about 50°F, which is why they are sold for stretching the swim season rather than for swimming in the middle of winter.
Should I leave the heater running?
Yes. A heat pump does its best work holding a temperature, not making big jumps. Set it, leave it on, and use a solar cover at night, since most pool heat is lost through the surface.
What does installation involve?
The heater sits outside on a level pad near your pool equipment and plumbs into the return line after the filter. Most units need a dedicated 230V circuit, so plan on an electrician for the hookup.
